Andrea LaFontaine, Executive Director
As a collaborator experienced in local, county and state government, Andrea’s background in policy, administration and trail building poise Michigan Trails for the future. In her role as the Trail Ambassador for the Great Lake-to-Lake Trails Route #1, she advocated for the completion of the destination trail, which spans 275 miles from South Haven to Port Huron. As Trail Ambassador, Andrea built new partnerships and fostered relationships with communities, businesses, local trail managers and users while encouraging collaboration for the advancement of trail networks throughout Michigan.
Prior to working for Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance, Andrea spent two years in the Executive Division at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, acting as the Southeast Michigan Policy Advisor and assisting the Iron Belle Trail team. Andrea facilitated the coordination of investments in metro-region trail networks and guided economic development initiatives across multiple government agencies. She was proud to establish and incorporate the Friends of the Outdoor Adventure Center, a 501(c)3.
Andrea came to the Executive Division after a successful career in the Legislature, serving three consecutive terms totaling six years in the Michigan House of Representatives. Representative LaFontaine served 90,000 residents in District 32 covering Northern Macomb as well as portions of St Clair County. During her tenure in the Legislature she served on multiple policy committees and was appointed chairwoman of the House Natural Resource Committee for four years.
Dedicated to protecting Michigan’s natural resources and our outdoor heritage, Andrea is a current Commissioner for Oakland County Parks and Recreation and a board member of Heart of the Lakes, Six Rivers Land Conservancy and Kadima Mental Health Services. She holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s degree in Public Administration both from Central Michigan University.
