Congrats, 2024 Catalyst Fund Recipients!

November 15, 2024

Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, Michigan Trails & Greenways Alliance is excited to announce funding for a second round of impactful projects through the MTGA Catalyst Fund! This unique program accelerates trail completion and provides critical support to local nonprofits and “Friends of the Trail” groups working to expand and improve Michigan’s trail network.

After a competitive review process, four organizations have been awarded grants to advance their trail initiatives.

2024 Catalyst Fund Grant Recipients

Forbush Corner Nordic
Project: 4-Season Expansion
Grant Award: $8,000

Forbush Corner Nordic will use this grant to expand snowmaking capabilities for cross-country skiing from 2 km to 3.3 km and begin developing 8 miles of mountain biking and hiking trails. Located on 196 acres, with opportunities to connect to surrounding state land, this project will introduce beginner to advanced trails designed and built by professional trail builders. The expanded facilities will enhance recreation access, promote tourism in Crawford and Otsego counties, and provide new opportunities for kids’ outdoor programs, fostering a healthy lifestyle for residents and visitors alike.

Calhoun County Trailway Alliance
Project: BlueOval Trail Development
Grant Award: $5,000

This funding will support the design and engineering of approximately 4 miles of new, paved trail along a conservation easement at Ford Motor Company’s BlueOval site in Marshall. The trail will link the Marshall Riverwalk to Historic Bridge Park, filling a key gap in Route 1 of the Great Lake-to-Lake Trail, the Iron Belle Trail, the North Country National Scenic Trail, and the Calhoun County Trailway. The project will provide a scenic and accessible recreation option for residents while advancing a critical connection in Michigan’s statewide trail network.

City of Memphis
Project: Trail Markers, Maps, and Signs
Grant Award: $6,500

This grant will allow the City of Memphis to install new signs and maps along its walking and biking trails. By improving wayfinding and promoting awareness of the trail system, the project will increase accessibility, encourage more community members to explore the trails and enhance the overall trail experience for residents and visitors.

Iron Ore Heritage Recreation Authority
Project: Koski Forest Colab Trail Project
Grant Award: $7,000

The Iron Ore Heritage Recreation Authority (IOHRA) will use this grant to conduct topographical assessments and planning for a new trail system within the Koski Forest, a 176-acre tract adjacent to the Iron Ore Heritage Trail in Marquette and Negaunee Townships. The project includes acquiring an additional 3 acres to create a trailhead and adaptive-friendly gateway, as well as developing plans for a “mini trail playground” for families. These efforts aim to provide inclusive trail experiences, enhance tourism, promote environmental education, and create a space for community engagement and family-friendly outdoor activities.

Supporting Trail Champions Across Michigan

The MTGA Catalyst Fund exists to empower local organizations to bring their trail visions to life. From trail markers to expansive new systems, these projects reflect the creativity and dedication of Michigan’s trail champions.

“We are honored to support these transformative initiatives,” said Andrea LaFontaine, Executive Director of Michigan Trails & Greenways Alliance. “These projects exemplify the power of trails to connect communities, create recreational opportunities, and inspire healthy outdoor lifestyles. Thanks to the generosity of our anonymous donor, we are thrilled to see these plans take shape and positively impact Michiganders for generations to come.”

These grants are pivotal to enhancing Michigan’s trail network and fostering healthier, more connected communities. MTGA looks forward to working alongside these organizations as they bring their projects to fruition.
